Reinforcing Learning

Use pockets of time to boost your child’s learning

If parents have five extra minutes during the day, how can they use that time to help their child learn? Here’s what teachers recommend:

  • Teach values. Read stories to your child that have moral dilemmas. Ask your child, “What would you do in this situation?” Discuss why actions are right or wrong.
  • Be a storyteller. Don’t just tell fantasy tales. Infuse them with information about the real world.
  • Tell your child you love him. Children need to feel loved and accepted to take the risks necessary to learn.
  • Teach your child basic life skills: Tying shoes. Making his bed. Preparing his own breakfast. Getting dressed in morning. Saving and managing money.
  • Explore the world together. Encourage your child to look, touch and ask questions.
  • Ask your child to tell you about what he finds interesting. Listen attentively to what he says.
