Dear Families of Elementary Students,

The Board of Education on March 9, 2010, for the purpose of a Budget Workshop. During this meeting a resolution was made and passed in a 4-3 vote to close Grafton Elementary School at the end of this school year in June, 2010.

All elementary students in the Berlin Central School District will attend Berlin Elementary School beginning in September, 2010. As part of the resolution that the Board of Education passed, modular classroom units will be added to the Berlin campus to accommodate the additional student population.

A transition plan for students and families is currently being developed to help ensure a smooth transition from GES to BES. This plan will include all of the following:

*          A survey for families to gain input on what should be included as part of the transition plan

*          An opportunity for each grade level to have their own “visiting day” at Berlin Elementary School

*          A collaborative PTO meeting where GES and BES PTO members meet to discuss which pieces from the history of GES are important to bring to BES for continued implementation

*          A Parent Night where families from GES come to BES to meet their child’s teacher for the upcoming school year

Frequent communication regarding the transition plan will be sent from school to home via the BES and GES WebPages, as well as newsletters.  From now until the end of this school year, thoughtful planning about events and activities that will assist with a positive transition that will honor and celebrate Grafton's history, as well as provide a seamless move to Berlin Elementary for students and families in the fall of 2010 will be a priority.

If you have any specific questions or concerns related to the information in this newsletter, please feel free to contact my office at 658-2690. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration in helping us to plan this transition process.

Sincerely,

Ms. Charlotte A. Gregory,

Interim Superintendent of Schools
