Office of Curriculum and Instruction

Berlin Central School District focuses on student mastery of the New York State Standards for each subject area. These standards are used to measure a minimum competency. To add rigor and relevance to each course, the District uses the Understanding by Design unit planning format. The purpose of this office is to maintain, align, and enhance a diverse and challenging curriculum for all our Berlin Central School District students.

 Department of Mathematics

At BCSD we understand that a comprehensive mathematics curriculum focuses on building students’ strength in the use of mathematical processes and math instruction in key areas incorporate the following practices:

  • the use of mathematics to solve problems
  • an application of logical reasoning to justify procedures and solutions
  • an involvement in the design and analysis of multiple representations to learn, make connections among, and communicate about the ideas within and outside of mathematics

In our mathematics classes multiple strategies are taught and accepted for problem solving. Problems are posed and inquiry based learning, experimentation and investigation are the methods in which to reach the solutions.
