Sonnet of Separation

By Jaime H

You make us feel separate from the whole,

As if we are not an intricate part,

But we know deep in the depths of our soul,

That we are the base and were from the start.

You need us to keep you from going down,

Yet you push us away without a sound.

Without us your poor dream would surely drown,

But you rather see us fall to the ground.

So we wallow in our separation,

Glad to pretend we believe what you say,

And you sit up high in meditation,

Trying to believe it will stay this way.

In time you won’t be able to deny

Your need for us, but then, we won’t comply.
