Introduction

Imagine that you are living in the mid 1800s. You have just lived through the Civil War.  Many of your friends and family were not as fortunate as you in the war.  What did you experience?  What was life like for you?  What is important for you to share with the future?  This is the story of your life during the American Civil War.  What will you choose to record?

The Task

You are assigned the task of researching, writing, and editing a scrapbook that focuses on an important topic of the Civil War.  For this project you will:

  1. Choose a topic of focus
  2. Complete FIVE note cards
  3. Create an individual or paired scrapbook using Microsoft Publisher.
  4. Answer reflective journal question, “How is your scrapbook relevant to today?”

STEP TWO: Using the links provided, read about your topic.  While you are reading, think about what may be interesting to add to your scrapbook.  Choose 5 subtopics for your scrapbook.

STEP THREE:  Using your note cards, take notes on your subtopics.  Use one card for each topic.  Remember, use your own words.   Once you have taken notes from a particular resource, fill out a bibliography card for that resource.  Use the bibliography forms provided by the library.

Step 4:  Using the websites provided, find a picture for each subtopic.  Save them to your network folder, so that when you go to do your scrapbook, they are there.  Remember to also save the link for the citation.

STEP 5:  Once you have gathered your pictures and completed you note cards, you are ready to create your scrapbook.  You will use Publisher to do this.  Take a look at the sample provided.

Your scrapbook will contain 2 pages, a front and a back.   On the front you will have 5 pictures and along with each picture you will have several facts from your note cards.  Under each picture, you will include the website where you found the picture.

On the back you will have a picture and a paragraph relating your topic to your life today.
