CLASS OF 2008 – LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Following is a list of scholarships that will be awarded at graduation on June 27, 2008. Applications are available in the Guidance Office and should be returned to Anne Lazarony, Guidance Counselor, NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2008.
Berlin Central School CSEA Award – Two $150 Awards Criteria: Graduating Senior attending 2 or 4- year school who has a parent or grandparent that is a member of the CSEA Labor Union. 1. Typewritten one to two page double-spaced essay “What it means to be a responsible citizen”. Due: June 9, 2008
Berlin Volunteer Fire Department Due Date: June 16 , 2008 $575 per year for up to four years – Total Award: $2,300 Must be a Berlin resident, graduating senior seeking a higher education in the following fields: Fire Science, Fire Protection Engineering, Forestry, Health, Medicine, Police Sciences, Education or Human Services.
RUTH B. CANFIELD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 2,500
Awarded to that member of the graduating class with the highest grade point average who is continuing his/her education.
NORMA LEWIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 1,000
Awarded to a Berlin High School graduate(s) enrolled in an accredited college program. May be divided and shared by a maximum of two graduates. Non-renewable. Selection based on financial need.
KJELSEN TRUST FUND SCHOLARSHIP - $ 1,850
Awarded to a Berlin High School graduate entering any university within New York State. May NOT be divided. May be renewed by applying. Selection based on financial need.
TAYLOR TRUST FUND SCHOLARSHIP - $ 950
Awarded to a Berlin High School graduate entering any university within New York State. May NOT be divided. May be renewed by applying. Selection based on financial need.
LESTER T. RUSSELL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 500
Awarded to a graduating senior living in the Berlin Central School District and enrolled in a two or four-year accredited college in the field of engineering and/business. May be divided. Non-renewable. Financial need is not a condition that must be met.
WILLIAM J. KINN SCHOLARSHIP - $ 500
Awarded to the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the graduating class as follows: 2/3 of amount to Valedictorian ($ 330) and 1/3 to Salutatorian ($ 170), provided both seek to further their education by attending an accredited college of higher learning.
BERLIN CENTRAL SCHOOL STAFF/STUDENT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 300
(In Memory of Paul Maxson, Gladys Carr, Lewis Wager, Jessie/Percy Griffiths, Louis and Nina Frey, and Mel Dapson).
Awarded to a Berlin High School graduate who has worked to the best of his/her ability and does not necessarily place at the top of the graduation class; to a graduate who desires to further his/her education either academically or technically; and to a graduate who has been courteous and considerate of others. May NOT be divided. Non-renewable.
BARBARA HORTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 50
Awarded to a current or former graduate of Berlin High School and/or member of the Berlin Central School faculty or staff pursuing a career in the education field. May NOT be divided. Non-renewable. Selection based on citizenship and financial need of applicants who do not have access to funds available to high academic achievers.
FRED AND PAT ORGAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 100
Awarded to an exceptional Berlin High School Senior enrolled in post high school education and/or training who exemplifies the interests and values of Fred and Pat Organ, as evidenced by concern for others and contribution to the school community. Non-renewable. Selection based on financial need.
DOROTHY I. GUTERMUTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND – To be determined
Awarded to a Berlin High School graduate who is continuing his/her education. Student must have a B+ or better grade point average in math, 95% attendance record, completed 95% of homework assignments on time, and demonstrates a strong work ethic. Award will NOT be given to Valedictorian or Salutatorian.
FRANCES PALMER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $ 500
Awarded to Berlin CSD senior enrolled in a two or four-year accredited college or university. All students with a “C” or higher average with a good attendance record will be considered equally eligible. Preference given to a student entering the education field, especially teaching. Student will have participated, at least one semester in at least one activity to include: chorus, band, sports, student government, club or other extra curricular activity.
Taconic Valley Garden Club Scholarship - $300
Awarded to Berlin CSD senior enrolled in a two or four-year accredited college or university in one of the following majors: Earth Science, Agriculture, Horticulture, Conservation or Environmental, Farming or Biology. All students with a “C” or higher average with a good attendance record will be considered equally eligible. To apply, write a letter to the Guidance Office applying for this scholarship that describes your goals, your major, and the college or university you will be attending.

BERLIN JR./SR. PTO SCHOLARSHIP GRADUATING SENIOR ATTENDING FOR TWO YEARS Must have participated in one of the following during the two years: Ø Music Program (Band/Chorus) and or Drama Club Ø Community Service (volunteer work within or outside the school) Ø Interscholastic Sports Program Application available in the Guidance Office.

Berlin Teachers’ Association Scholarship
1. Graduating senior who is interested in pursuing a career in the field of education. 2. Fill out the form in the Counseling Office and return with the attached essay to Ms. Elacqua. 3. Due Date: June 1, 2008.

Petersburgh Fire
Department – Cindy Harrison Memorial Scholarship Requirements:
Current or former Berlin High School graduate, or person who has attended
Berlin High School for a minimum of two years and has earned a GED who has
overcome obstacles and/or struggled through adversity and who exemplifies the
interests and values of former firefighter Cindy Harrison as evidenced by a
caring nature, active involvement and concern for others. 1. Completed scholarship application submitted
to the Fire Department before May 15, 2008. 2. Brief essay summarizing how he/she meets
the basic criteria 3. Two letters of recommendation from
non-relatives. 4. Applicant must be planning to attend
college or vocational training and be fully matriculated prior to receiving
the award/grant. Scholarship
applications are available in the Guidance Office.
The John G. and Diana S. Waite Scholarship - $1,000
